Additives & Extras: what's safe, what isn't.
The 'little extras' derail more trials than dog food does — table scraps, flavoured meds, and one treat too many. Several common pantry items are also outright toxic.
- Xylitol (sweetener)Never feed
In sugar-free gum, some peanut butters and baked goods — causes a blood-sugar crash and liver failure.
- ChocolateNever feed
Theobromine is toxic to dogs; darker chocolate is worse.
- Macadamia nutsNever feed
Cause weakness, tremors and vomiting — even just a few.
- Caffeine & alcoholNever feed
Both are dangerous to dogs — keep them well out of reach.
- NutmegNever feed
Contains myristicin — larger amounts cause tremors and seizures.
- Blue cheeseNever feed
Mould-ripened cheeses (blue, Roquefort) contain roquefortine — can trigger tremors.
- Artificial colours & preservativesCan trigger
Some dogs are sensitive; limited-ingredient foods leave them out.
- Salt & seasoningsCan trigger
Skip salty, spiced or fatty human leftovers.
- Plain peanut butterUsually safe
A great treat — but ONLY if it's verified xylitol-free.
- CoconutUsually safe
Small amounts of flesh or oil are fine; a lot causes loose stool.
Hidden extras are the #1 way a trial gets reset. Before you give anything new, check it — that's exactly what an elimination tracker is for.
