If your dog seems to have drawn the itchy short straw, it may genuinely be in their genes. Allergic skin disease — especially environmental allergy (atopic dermatitis) — has a strong hereditary component, and decades of breeding have concentrated that risk in certain breeds. Knowing whether your dog is predisposed doesn't doom them to misery; it gives you a head start to catch and manage problems early.
Allergies are in the genes
Atopic dermatitis isn't something a dog simply catches — there's an inherited tendency for the immune system to over-react to everyday environmental allergens. Cornell University's veterinary college puts it plainly:
A genetic component is suspected because certain breeds and families of dogs are predisposed to this condition.
That genetic basis is why allergies cluster in particular breeds, why they often run in related dogs, and why a predisposed dog frequently shows signs young — as dermatologist Dr. Frane Banovic notes, atopic dermatitis typically begins between 6 months and 3 years of age.
Which breeds are most prone?
Many breeds carry elevated risk. Cornell's list of commonly affected breeds is a good starting point:

Just how much higher is the risk in a predisposed breed? Consider the West Highland White Terrier, one of the poster breeds for atopy. Against a general-population rate of 10–15%, studies have suggested a far higher share of Westies are affected:

What predisposition actually means for you
A few honest points if your dog is on the list:
- It's a tendency, not a certainty. Plenty of Labs and Frenchies never develop significant allergies; the genes load the dice, they don't guarantee the outcome.
- It's usually environmental, not just food. Breed-linked allergy is mostly atopic (pollens, dust mites, mould) — though food allergy can occur alongside it.
- It tends to show up young. Watch for early signs (itchy paws, ears, belly; recurring ear infections) in the first one to three years.
- It's lifelong but manageable. Atopic dermatitis can't be cured, but it can be controlled well — many predisposed dogs live comfortable lives with the right plan.
The head start you can give a high-risk dog
Knowing your dog is predisposed lets you act early and smart:
- Catch it early. Don't dismiss persistent paw-licking, ear infections or seasonal itch as 'just a phase' — early management prevents the skin damage and infections that make allergies worse.
- Lock in flea control. A flea allergy stacked on top of atopy is misery; rock-solid, year-round prevention removes one whole variable.
- Support the skin barrier. Ask your vet about omega-3s, and build a sensible bathing and paw-care routine to wash off allergens.
- Track the pattern. Note when and where your dog itches — seasonality is gold for your vet (see seasonal allergies).
- Rule food in or out properly. If the itch is year-round or comes with gut signs, talk to your vet about an elimination trial.
